Could Local Anesthesia During Surgery Cause Low Blood Sugar And Seizures?

I am 21 years old and recently had a biopsy on my colon. It was under general anesthesia, same day surgery. My blood sugar went low(66) during surgery so they gave me some dextrose through my IV. It went back up to 98 and they finished the procedure and took me to recovery where I had a 15 minute seizure. They gave me anti-seizure medicine in my IV and I came out of it. They said I stiffened my arms to my chest and my pupils were big. Had 2 other seizures before lasting a minute or 2 due to low blood sugar. No family history of seizures. Just wondered if this is from the local anesthetic I received? Thanks for your time.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Hypoglycemia is one of the most life threatening complications during a surgery. Local anesthetic can mask a hypoglycemia-altered mental status which may cause permanent brain injury.

Common causes of intraoperative seizure are hypoglycemia or low blood glucose level, electrolyte imbalances, medications like local anaesthetics, hypoxemia or low level of oxygen in blood, surgical related effects.

The most common adverse reactions to local anaesthetic agents are seizure. Neurologic dedeficits, both sensory and motor, correspond to the blocked nerves that may be transient or permanent. Sometimes, at high doses they act as pro-convulsant drugs, lowering the seizure threshold in the cerebral cortex, amyglada and hippocampus, leading to develop seizures.

Take care. Hope you have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
