Could Intake Of Doxycycline And Lymecycline For Acne Cause Weight Gain?

My daughter has moderate acne and has been on Doxyclycline and is now on Lymecycline. These help her spots but she has put on weight (about 10 kilos overweight and she is 155cm tall she weighs 62kg) . More worryingly she has really thin hair on her scalp so that she gets sunburn in moderately sunny conditions. The GP has no answers. She has had hormones checked thro bloods but no imbalances. Is it the drugs she is taking for acne? If not what other avenues should I pursue? She s 16 and really sensitive.

Doxycycline and lymecycline are given for acne for a maximum period of one month and it is unlikely that these drugs can cause weight gain. However these drugs can cause dermatitis when the skin is exposed to sun in daytime. Other causes of weight gain in your daughter should be looked for. Poly cystic ovarian syndrome is a condition which commonly causes weight gain in the teenage group. Hence kindly do an ultrasound of abdomen to rule out poly cystic ovarian disease. Other cause for obesity such as cushing's syndrome and hypothyroidism should also searched
