Could Dark Coloured Stools Be Normal Post Mucosal Resection Procedure?

I had a mycosa resection in my espophagus to remove polyps on Tuesday (9/1/15) in Orlando. My doctor had been treating me for barrett s espophagus for a few years now..a recent checkup discovered some polyps that may have been cancer or the beginning of that. All previous biopsies came back negative. During this procedure, he said that I was bleeding Coulsome internally but he was sure that he was able to stop the bleeding. That evening and into Wed morning, I had a stomach ache that eventually went away. I have been on Nexium 40MG twice daily and only taking small amounts of water after the surgery. Wed evening, I had some soft food, i.e. jello and a small portion of mashed potatoes. Early this morning,(Thursday, Sep 3)I noticed I had a black stool when I had my first BM since the procedure. I drove home today to NW Florida Panhandle about 450 miles. I had a second bowel movement tonight and I noticed my stool was dark brown or black which would indicate dried or old blood. Is this normal or if it continues tomorrow should I consult my local physician. I am not eating or drinking anything hot or cold for the next few days

Hi,

Thanks for your question.

After going through your question, I can understand your concern.

As you have mentioned there was internal bleeding during procedure.
The bleeding was in upper part of gastrointestinal system.
To excreted that blood has to pass through whole digestive tract.
Due to effect of different types of digestive enzymes blood turns black while excretion through stool.

Usually it took aroud 36 to 96 hours to pass any type of partical to travel from stomach (food storing bag) to rectum and to be excreted in stool.

So you can wait for another 2 to 3 days to clear black colored stool.

For safer side repeat your Haemoglobin level to see any significant drop in reading as compared to any postoperative reading available.
Which can help in timely detection of any active internal bleeding if present.

Hope this helps you , if so do vote as helpful.
