Could A Swollen, Painful Bump On Knee Post An Injury Indicate Blood Clot?

I was hit on the right leg approx 1/2 up the right shin with a softball. Swelled up immediately and was for about a week. Swelling has subsided but bruising was very bad all around lower leg and inside of foot. Still a very large lump at point of impact but the rest of the swelling is almost gone. The bruising on the inside of my foot started to go away but then reappeared along with more bruising on the outside of the foot as well. There wasn t a lot of pain while it was swollen but now the the swelling has gone down it is very painful from my knee to my foot. I am concerned about blood clot, or a fracture. Should I see a Dr or are these normal symptoms? It has been 9 days since the injury and the bump is warm to the touch.

Hi,

Usually pain, bruising and swelling following such injuries results from contusion or hematoma. Since it is already 9 days, and symptoms have started worsening after initial improvement with pain, tenderness and local warmth, there is high chance of secondary infection of the initial hematoma or contusion. Kindly see your doctor without delay, as this need antibiotic treatment to avoid progression to cellulitis and abscess formation. Meanwhile, keep the limb elevated and take analgesics like ibuprofen for pain relief.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
