Child Having Difficulty In Watching Distant Objects. Having Cylindrical Number. Suggested Wearing Glasses. Will Number Increase If Glasses Not Used?

Hi Doctor, My son is 3.9 years old. Recently we visited eye specialist to get his eyes tested as he was squeezing his eyes while watching distant objects. As per the doctors, he has a cylindrical number 2.5 in left eye and 3.5 in his right eye. They suggest us to use a specs for him. I am concerned and want to check, since he is just 3 years old, he may not wear the glasses regularly, will his number increase as the years passes. Is there any way we can get it treated at this age?

Hi Mr.Ashish,
'Cylindrical power' in medical terms is called 'Astigmatism' is a condition in which there is blurred vision due to
- due to irregular shape of the Cornea or
- the surface of the Lens.

The only treatment at this age is wearing prescribed glasses.

I know it is quite difficult as a parent to accept the fact and his regularity in using glasses. But you might be surprised to see that Children with such significant power will be happy using the glass as they can see things better.

All you must do is encourage him wearing it throughout the day and take him for a checkup once every 6 months or as suggested by your eye doctor. And get a Corneal Topography scan done to check any irregularities in Corneal shape [ and a Cornea specialist opinion if told by your doctor].

If it was my child I would get him glasses right away. I hope this helps.Take care.

Hi, Ashish
Thanks for your query.
Your child had myopia.
It is common in childhood. It is not true that the number increases as years passes.it's progress may diminish & it becomes stagnant.
just watch he should wear glasses regularly so that no strain to his eyes will be there.Give him vitamin A rich food like carrots etc.
OK don't worry 7 check numbers every six monthly.
