Child Having Diarrhoea, Vomiting, Fever, No Appetite And No Energy. Moderately Dehydrated. What To Do?

Hi, I am a concerned mother. My six year old son has had diarrhea, vomiting, no appetite, and no energy to do anything. I took him to the doctor on Thursday for all of these symptoms. It started on a Friday; he missed school for a fever of 100.2. He seamed fine on Saturday but he did complain of his stomach hurting and he was farting a lot. I thought maybe he just had to go to the restroom or gas pains. Sunday he laid around, he didn't do a whole lot. He went to school on Monday; and then Tuesday early morning about 1:30 a.m. he started vomiting. Then on Tuesday afternoon he started diarrhea; it was off and on all that day, not being able to keep any fluids down. Wednesday he vomited in the morning and afternoon, he was able to eat toast, water and Gatorade; but it all came up that night. Thursday he ate a pop tart and went to the doctor. He seemed better--smiling and talking which he hadn't done all week. Then Thursday about 8:15 p.m. he vomited everything back up. Friday he had diarrhea probably about 5 times that day. Saturday he felt fine in the morning well weak but I understood why he would be weak. But then he vomited again Saturday evening about 7:00 p.m. Now its Sunday and he has had diarrhea 4 times today. Could this be a flu bug that is lasting longer than usual or something else? He says his stomach hurts on his sides and a little by the belly button. He is not eating hardly at all and you have to force fluids down him. I don't want him to have severe dehydration, I'm pretty sure he has moderate dehydration. I just don't know what to do? He is a first grader and he has missed a lot of school. I was hoping he would be feeling better by now with the holiday weekend. His diarrhea isn't watery like it was at first now it is like pudding.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,
Thank you for your query on Healthcare Magic.
The child seems having an episode of acute gastroenteritis mostly due to a virus or bacteria.
Keep on giving sips of oral rehydration fluids to maintain his hydration.
Monitor his hydration by his activity, urine out put, thirst, and skin turgor.
To control vomitings you I suggest an anti emetic like ondansetron in prescribed dose.
Consult the pediatrician for assessment and for prescription of medication.
Hope I have answered your query.
Regards.
