My wife is 20 weeks pregnant with low lying placental at 1.5 cm from os. I am planning an travel on 01 Aug (23 weeks) 17 hrs by AC 3 Tyre due to family problems.. is it safe for my child or not.. she s not not having any complication other than white discharge occasionally ..
A placenta within 3 cm of the internal os is called a placenta previa. It may bleed at any point of time and the bleeding can be heavy needing urgent medical care. It usually bleeds after 24-28 weeks but this is not a rule and may bleed any time. So she needs rest and restricted activity. We do not advocate long distance travel in such cases due to risk of bleeding. Travel by air if possible as it is quicker and even that will not be safe later on.
If you do need to travel by a train then she may use drugs like progesterone to help keep the uterus relaxed after consulting your doctor and travel in lying down position. But please understand the risk associated and the need for an emergency intervention and then go ahead.
All my best wishes are with you.
