Can Using Estradiol Patches And Progesterone Pills Cause Damage To Uterus?

I used estradiol patches and progesterone pills for a few months. For the last year and a half, just the patches as my insurance wouldn t cover the progesterone. I was told I ll need ultrasound as it may have damaged my uterus. I m not of child bearing age, so this is not a concern in that respect. Can you tell me what damage this may have caused?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello, greetings! Thanks for your query. Estrogen patches can be harmful if used for longer periods of time. Excess of estrogen may cause thickening of the inner layer of the uterus (a condition called as endometrial hyperplasia), thus the concern about prescribing you for an ultrasound. Other side effects include abnormal period bleeding, increased susceptibility to blood clots, liver problems, breast lump/ breast cancer etc. Kindly use alternative methods of birth control.
