Can Use Of Benzodiazepines Drugs During Pregnancy Lead To PDD-NOS In The Child?

Hi, my name it Toni, I m 30 year old mother of a 6 year old son who has recently been diagnosed with PDD-NOS, I am a recovering addict of options and benzodiazepines, I have never spoken a wordof that while I was pregnant with my son until today. My 1st question is, do you think that my addiction to options & benzos caused my son s disability:(??? I feel TERRIBLE ! There hasn t been a single day I haven t felt guilt knowing what I may know now. And if not, what is the chances of having a child with autism or PDD? How does that happen?

Hello.
Thanks for writing to us.
The disability in your son can be related to the opioids and benzo diazepines that you took during the pregnancy. But this cannot be proved in any way.
I hope this information has been both informative and helpful for you.

OBGYN Dr. Kamalpreet Kaur's  Response
Hi.the cause for PDD is usually genetic. Some chromosomal disorder. The drugs taken by you if in small doses might not have effected that way. The baby could have cleft palate, floppy baby , hypotonia, etc. Drugs taken in large doses or more frequently harm more. But don't blame yourself now. You have already stopped everything and trying to overcome this. It is really great. Take care of your child and get proper treatment and make him confident. You can consult genetic department and centre for such problems . Don't be guilty now and face everything bravely.
Thanks.
