Can Stent In Bowel Duct Solve Blocked Bowel Problem?

My brother s doctor said he probably had liver cancer after the ultrasound showed a mass. He was scheduled for EUS biopsy today, but when they went in they found a blocked bowel and put a stent in the bowel duct. His stool was white. Will the stent solve the problem or is a biopsy of the liver still needed? BTW. He is in no pain...

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

As per the history you have provided this looks to be indicative of cancer. Passing a stent helps to relieve obstruction and its side effects. White stools indicate obstruction to the bile duct. So passing a stent is important but in some cases it only extends life. Hence it is important to have biopsy, Contrast enhanced CT scan and MRCP of abdomen to know the extent of spread of cancer. All these under a guidance of a Gastro cancer Specialist or Onco-surgeon can help to decide further management. So carry on as advised by the Specialist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
