Can Repetitive Urine Infections Be Due To A Kidney Donation?

hi doctor i finally am starting to ask questions after years of suffering urine infections, I need some answers please.......April 2003 I was a kidney donor for my husband, prior to this I have never had kidney or urine infections, Since then 3 to 4 times a year I get infections sometimes with no symptoms. The transplant co-ordinater says there is no link or studies of living donor with this problem, I truly believe my immune system has weakened which leads to me picking up any infections, anti-biotics have now come to a point with little effect, I have asked the team to put me on a small dose for 6 months as a preventative seems like no one is listening to me. I dont know what to do other than research this. Regards Balvinder Perifanos (41) age

Urologist 's  Response
No it has not been shown that kidney donors are prone to get recurrent UTIs or any sort of weakening of immunity. Despite this, it would be advisable to get worked up for the UTI as per the advise of a urologist. Also it is advisable to be on regular follow up in view of the single kidney. While prophylactic antibiotics may be given to some patients, it is important to find the cause of UTI first.
