Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Can Persistent Cough Cause Elevation In Blood Sugar Levels?
Can an illness cause a spike in blood sugar? In June my A1C was 6.7...I am a 77 year old male. In Oct I developed a pretty bad non-productive cough. On Dec 27 my blood sugar was 12.1. the cough has persisted and my doc cannot find the source. I am miserable!
You have 6.7 A1c value and it rise to 12.1. You have already diabetes. So rise in value could be due to systemic illness that you had, poor control of diabetes. If you have taken steroid then it again increase A1c value. I would suggest to consult your diabetologist and take proper treatment of diabetes.
You require increase dose of medicine or start insulin like glyberide. Do regular exercise and take healthy diet.
Hope this may help you. Contact HCM further if follow up needed.
Best regards, Dr. Sagar
