Can Morphine Patches Cause Hallucinations?

My 81 year mother is insisting that she is visited at night by two children and that she hears someone signing. She lives alone and locks herself inside her bedroom each night, hence no intruders. I am concerned because she is insisting that this is occurring on a regular basis. She was placed on morphine patches for pain after she fell and broke her arm ( she is no longer on the patches) What can I make of this. Connie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Auditory or visual hallucinations are not very common side effects of morphine patches but yes it is true with few individuals. You can talk to her doctor for a smaller dose patch to avoid hallucinations.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
