Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I had unprotected sex about a week ago and I had to take plan b yesterday for the same reason . I m having some cramping . It might be my period cause I should be starting soon but I did just get off birth control about four months ago and it s been a little sporadic aver since..do you think I could be pregnant or is it just the plan b ?
Hi, Thanks for writing to HCM. Plan B is an emergency contraceptive pill. It needs to be taken within 72 hours of unprotected sex. As per your description, it is not sure that you did take within the period mentioned. If you have taken it a week after the act, as you have stated, then it will offer protection against pregnancy. But of course, abdominal pain is one of the side effects that could be caused by intake of Plan B. In case you get your periods, as you are feeling so, it will confirm that you are not pregnant. By chance, there is delay or you miss your periods, you need to get your urine tested for pregnancy. Hope the information provided would be useful for you. All the best.
