Can Intake Of Valacyclovir For Shingles Cause Pain And Swelling In Eyes?

My wife has shingles and she is in another state,so Im not there. She came down with them 4 days ago,and went in got a shot and is currently taking valacyclovir... but I feel like she my be having a sever reaction to the meds because both eyes are hurting badly and swelling to the point of stickyness and shut because of it...does the shingles just need to run it s course...or should go bacl to her DR. there or an emergency room tonite...?? thanks so much !

Hello,

Her symptoms are indicative of Herpes zoster ophthalmicus (HZO). Rash in the forehead may be associated with the swelling of the eye lid. Other symptoms may be eye pain, eye redness, light sensitivity, stickiness or shutting of the eye.

Let her take the prescription medicines and stay at rest. It may take time to subside, if she is very uncomfortable, you can consult her treating doctor, he may give intravenous acyclovir for faster effect. Get the treating doctor informed of the symptoms & do as instructed.
