Can Insomnia Cause Memory Issues?

I have had insomnia for years. Recently I have started to have severe long term memory issues, I can t recall almost anything beyond 4-5 years. I have no problems with motor skills. My more recent memories are mostly solid but it just doesn t seem to be as sharp. Could insomnia be the cause or something more severe?
