Can Hypoglycemia Cause Unconsciousness?

What blood sugar level would cause a person to become unconscious? My husband had a blood sugar level of 40 recently and I called 911 for help but I want to know how close he was to unconsciousness. I m worried about being prepared for future Hypoglycemic episodes.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

Hypoglycaemia definitely causes loss of consciousness and fainting. However, it is transient and will return when blood sugar level goes up.

He can keep a sugar candy with him a take it when he feels symptoms of hypoglycaemia.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
