Can High Blood Pressure Medication Be Taken Only When The BP Is High?

I have a friend taking high blood pressure medicine only when she feels it is high. She tells us that is what her Dr. told her to do. We feel she misunderstood him or she just does not want to take the meds. Would a Dr. tell a patient to only take the high blood pressure meds when she wanted?

Hi,
There are no symptoms of high blood pressure only the serious consequences will be experienced such as strokes. Therefore, a person cannot recognise when the blood pressure is high. For example, headaches are not a reliable sign of high blood pressure. Therefore, you are probably correct with your comment and there may have been a misunderstanding.
I suggest you encourage her to take her medication and discuss with her doctor at the earliest opportunity any need for a change of dosage.
