Can Difficulty In Urinating While Suffering From An Enlarged Prostate Be Treated?

Hi, I m 71 yrs old and in Basic Good Health. Last Sept they said I had an Enlarged Prostate. They Put a Catheter in and I ve been on 1 pill Finesteride and 2 pills of Tamsulosin. I go to the Doctor on the 7th of March to see If I can Urinate enough to remove the Catheter. If the finesteride doesn t do the Job is there any other Drug that might do the trick? I m really trying not to have to have an Operation. We have tried a gouple of times in Previous Months but I didn t Urinate enough on my own so they put in the Catheter again

Hello,

First of all, I would like to tell you that enlarged prostate cause pressure on the urethra, thus it's difficult to pass the urine or there is the dribbling of the urine.

The treatment you choose will be based on how bad your symptoms are and how much they bother you. Your provider will also take into account other medical problems you may have.

Treatment options include watchful waiting, lifestyle changes, medicines, or surgery. Self-care steps are often enough to make you feel better. If you have BPH, you should have a yearly exam to monitor your symptoms and see if you need changes in treatment. But as in your case, you are not able to empty the bladder without the catheter, I would suggest you go ahead with surgery otherwise continuous use of a catheter may have an increased risk of infection.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Medhavi Agarwal
