Can Dairy Allergy Cause Vomiting And Diarrhea Despite Taking Pantoprazole?

I have had severe diarrhea and vomiting of bile for 40 years. it only happens sporatically, 5 months to 1 year apart. the last time It finally got so bad my blood pressure dropped to 60/40 (dehydration) I could not see with my eyes open everything went black I did not pass out I could still hear people talking and I could talk. I had my gallbladder out 2 1/2 years ago thought that was the problem. when I went to the E.R. about 6 months ago they found I had diverticulosis, gastritous, and acid reflux, by using the scope. I followed up with my G.I. doctor who told me non of what they found is causing my problem. I tested neg for siliacs desease. I am on pantopropazal for acid reflux. I have just had another episode, I cant go on like this. the only thing I can guess is I had dairy based deserts for thanks giving. could dairy products be causing this?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Dairy products can cause diarrhea. They can cause vomiting, but this is not common. You can consider a food diary to see if you can find an association with particular foods and your symptoms. In addition, you can consider a blood test for lactose intolerance. If this is not an option then avoid lactose products (use lactose free milk/cheese etc). Food allergies can also sometimes present in this way, so this would be the last option for testing.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Michelle Gibson James
