Can Chronic Heartburn Cause Supraventricular Tachycardia?

my 25 year old son woke with heartburn (from which he has been suffering for a while) and then got SVT s shortly after, which resulted in a visit to A&E. Became a little panicky and had pins and needles in fingers. ECG normal in A&E. After approx 2 weeks he was playing football and had SVT again. He said he felt dizzy but with a heavy feeling and again, pins and needles in fingers. A second visit to A&E resulted in normal ECG again. Hospital thought it may be a good idea if he went to his GP for a 24 hour ECG, but instead the GP put him on Lansoprazole. Is the heartburn causing SVT s and is this the correct course of action?

Hi,

Was he diagnosed to have SVT by ECG anytime before?And how a diagnosis of SVT was suspected/concluded now? SVT usually presents with acute onset palpitation and dizziness, fluttering in chest or excessive sweating or syncope. Here ECG must be abnormal, unless transient and go for spontaneous version.

Heartburn can not be a cause for SVT. If SVT is a strong suspicion, 24 hour ECG monitoring is the ideal way. But your GP might have done clinical assessment and excluded a possibility. Lansoprazol will relieve heartburn caused by acidity. Just continue that and see the response. We can evaluate further in case no response and symptoms suggestive of SVT recurs.
