Can abdominal distention be a symptom of an intestinal blockage?

Yes I hope you can.I have gotten extremely large upper abdomen. Small intestine area. my bowel movements have changed. They are small in size ; size of my ring finger. Even if I take laxative they are the same. and not near sufficient for me. Could this be an intestinal blockage.

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Abdominal distension may be due to gastritis or food Intolerance or Irritable Bowel syndrome or infection or obstruction etc..Until examination is done it is difficult to say what it is. Please avoid spicy food and alcohol avoid smoking and caffeine drinks. Use tablet pantoprazole before breakfast for one week. If symptoms not improved please consult your doctor he will examine and treat you accordingly.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Can you give me some specifics regarding blockage of the celiac artery? I have a history of abdominal pain though to my back, numerous attacks, some ER visits and hospital stays, recently 8 days in the hospital. Had CT chest scan, CT abdominal scan, x-rays, small bowel follow through, MRCP, MRA, numerous blood tests, EGD. EGD showed the gastritis that I ve been battling for 2 years. Other than that, only an ovarian cyst was found. Would ANY of the above tests have shown a celiac blockage? I m being told by someone with a similar history who was finally diagnosed with a celiac blockage that I need a specific MRI abdominal angiogram or ultrasound.

I just got out of the hospital a week ago with a blockage in my small intestines My dr said part of my small intestines wasn t functioning properly and sometimes they would start contracting back on there own. I had the tube suctioning my stomach for 4 days then we did the dye test and they said some of the die was going thru the digestive tract properly. I still do not really feel good even though I am having some bowel movement, Could this be dangerous if the blockage is still there ? I am suppose to see my family Dr again in a week. They decided too wait on surgery to see if they would contract on their own.
