Can Ventolin HF And Qvar Inhalers Be Used Together?

Can I use Ventolin HF Inhaler together with QVAR 80 mcg? My son has asthma and he is coughing a lot and his chest sound very congested and the next time for the QVAR is in 9hrs. His doctor prescribed him today the QVAR and told me to use only it for 2 weeks and then switch to Ventolin. Thanks in advance for answering my question. Mrs. Roque

Hello,

They can be used together but Ventolin HF should be used first. Ventolin HF (Salbutamol) is a bronchodilator which produces immediate relief when used to treat bronchospasm and wheezing associated with asthma. Qvar (Beclomethasone) is an anti-inflammatory (corticosteroid) used to prevent bronchospasm and maintain the treatment.

The Qvar inhaler is the medication your son needs to take every day to help control his asthma. The Ventolin inhaler is usually reserved for when he has trouble breathing, coughing/wheezing, or having an asthma attack. If your son needs his Ventolin inhaler more than twice a week, that means his asthma is not controlled properly and may need more medications like Qvar.

So by all means, please continue giving him the Qvar inhaler as advised by his the doctor and use the Ventolin inhaler only as needed. If you want to use both at the same time, some pharmacist suggests using the Ventolin inhaler to be used first followed by Qvar inhaler later.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
