Can Tamsulosin And Prazosin Be Taken Together?

I have been taking tamulosin for years, since my Doctor prescribed me Prazosin for hypertension and it has interaction with tamulosin. Therefore, I was advised stop taking tamulosin since Prazosin may also treat BPH. What is your comment? Thank you.

Hello,

It's not safe to take Tamsulosin and Prazosin together. Tamsulosin is an alpha-adrenergic blocker commonly used to improve urination in men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH).

Prazosin is also an alpha-adrenergic blocker commonly used to treat hypertension (high blood pressure). It is also found to be effective the urinary symptoms associated with BPH.

If taken together, these medications may cause blood pressure to fall excessively and heart rate to increase, especially when you rise from a sitting or lying position.

The risk of other side effects such as dizziness, lightheadedness, fainting, headache, flushing, nasal congestion, heart palpitations, and priapism (prolonged and painful erection unrelated to sexual activity) may also increase.

So, you have been rightly advised to stop taking Tamsulosin because Prazosin alone can be effective in controlling your blood pressure as well as the urinary symptoms associated with BPH.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
