Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 29 years old, female, and currently using an IUD for birth control. Lately, I seem to bleed an extremely heavy amount during my period (to the point of fatigue and inability to get out of bed sometimes) and for longer than usual. I am also on a opiate-based pain medication regularly. A friend told me opiates thin your blood. Could my opiate pain meds be a cause of this?
Opiate medicines are not known to cause excessive bleeding.
Based on the history you seem to be suffering from abnormal uterine bleeding which could be due uterine polyps, fibroids, infection of the cervix or thyroid disease.
A gynecologist consultation is recommended.
Opiate pain medications do not cause excessive bleeding as their side effect.
hope I have answered your query.
