Can Lisinopril And Valsartan Be Taken Together?
I was on Lisinopril for quite a number of years. I just got a prescription for Valsartan because I have such a bad cough from Lisinopril. I am a Type 2 diabetic (20 years). With Lisinopril I took 20mg, now I will be taking 160 mg of Valsartan. Do you think this is too much?

It's not safe to take these medications together.
Lisinopril (ACE-inhibitor) and Valsartan (angiotensin receptor blocker) are commonly prescribed alone to treat high BP and heart failure.
Taking Valsartan together with Lisinopril may increase the risk of side effects such as low blood pressure, kidney function impairment, and a condition called hyperkalemia (high blood potassium).
In its severe form, hyperkalemia can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest. You may be more likely to develop hyperkalemia while taking these medications if you are elderly, dehydrated, or have kidney disease, diabetes, or advanced heart failure.
Therefore, in view of the above, for the effective control of BP, Lisinopril or Valsartan should not be taken together, instead of another drug like Hydrochlorothiazide may be added to either of these medications to control the BP.
