Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

Julmentin is an antibiotic (like Amoxicillin) and despite my research, I was not able to find a drug named "Ferin."

A doctor makes a prudent decision when he/she takes the culture of the child's throat prior to prescribing an antibiotic. The reason for the culture is to see if the throat infection (or pharyngitis) is due to the strep bacteria. If it is, then giving the patient an antibiotic will shorten the child's discomfort. If the culture is negative for the strep germ, then her throat infection is caused by a virus which will not respond to an antibiotic. I feel as you do that an illness with throat infection, cough, and vomiting is likely to be caused by a virus.

If your daughter is not dehydrated (no tears, no saliva, dry mouth and tongue, reduced urine output) and body temperature under 101, it will be safe to put her to bed with nothing given by mouth. This will allow her stomach to settle. When she awakes, offer a few spoonfuls of crushed ice chips. Then let her return to sleep. Should she wake again during the night, offer more ice chips. In the morning, if there has been no vomiting through the night and she is hungry, you may give her anything she wishes to eat. Then allow her to rest some more in bed.

There are many cold and cough syrups sold in supermarkets and pharmacies. Despite this, there is NO good evidence that they are effective and they certainly can cause side effects. This is even true for Codeine.

If she stops vomiting, the best treatment for cough will be keeping her well hydrated (which will help her respiratory secretions become thin and watery and easier to cough out); give her throat lozenges.

Hope I have answered your query. If you have any further questions, I will be happy to help.
