Can Fluconazole Be Taken For Vaginal Infection?

I ve just had a bi-monthly round of chemo on Friday. When speaking with nurse she said it would because of chemo, yeast inflections are common and it d be okay to use otc Monistat. On Monday I used a one-day otc treatment with crème. I continue to have external irritation when I urinate if area is not protected by Vaseline. I do have the fluconazole tablet 150 that had been prescribed to take when I completed short course of antibiotic for uti- finished Saturday. Can I take the fluconazole now? Sorry- I didn t realize this isn t a free service. I ll call my providers.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You can take fluconazole single oral dose to help with the symptoms you have. If the symptoms don't improve in 2-3 days than you will need to see your doctor because there are other possible causes of the symptoms you are experiencing a visit is needed in this case. Using vaseline locally is a good idea to help protect the area and please avoid local chemical washing products like soaps or foams as they change PH and also make you sensitive to their ingredients and causing discomfort in the genital area. Washing with warm water locally 1-2 times a day and using cotton underwear is helpful.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Antoneta Zotaj
