Can Citalopram Completely Cure Depression?

Hi, recently my significant other started an antidepressant Citalopram and initially it seemed to almost immediately lift her up and make her happy for the first time in many, many months within one week of taking it, but it also seemingly made her start acting out of character and wanting to do things I, and her friends, view as impulsive and massively risky. Namely wanting to end our relationship even though she says she fully loves me and would enjoy living out the rest of her days with me and that there are NO problems in our relationship simply to pursue other people because it sounds exciting (We ve been extremely committed to each other for many years so this is very out of nowhere and drastic). Is this normal and will she start behaving more rationally after the 3-4 weeks it takes for the medicine to become fully functional?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Citalopram is a drug that treats depression but it may worsen hypomania in patients with bipolar disorder. In this case, the patient may feel euphoric and do things that seem very impulsive and even dangerous.

It is important that she seeks medical advice and possibly get a mood stabilizer as well (lithium or quetiapine) to help with the hypomania.

I hope this answers your query.
I remain at your disposal for further medical assistance.
