Can Cipralex Cause Sleep Deprivation And Vertigo?

I am a 60 year old male in good health. I am taking 10mg Cipralex (Celexa) for anxiety and have for the last 4 months been very pleased with my mood and energy level. I have two problems, 1) I cannot stay asleep hence I am constantly tired and, 2) My balance has, in the last two weeks, been affected. I cannot move my head back (to, say, put in eye-drops) without experiencing severe Vertigo. I would like to know if the Cipralex is causing the sleep deprivation AND vertigo. Thank you.

Hi,

Cipralex contains escitalopram that belongs to the group of antidepressant medication known as selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or SSRIs. It is used in the treatment of anxiety disorder, panic disorder, depression, obsessive compulsive disorder etc. Similar to other medication, this medication has some side effects of its own. According to FDA, more than 10% of patients suffered from sleep deprivation or insomnia while taking this medication. At the beginning, Cipralex may cause worsen or cause sleep deprivation or insomnia.

Other side effects of this medication are tiredness, weakness, vertigo, changes in appetite, weight gain, headache, sweating, nausea, vomiting, dry mouth, dizziness and many more. These side effects are mild as well as self limiting and usually go away over time as the body adjusts to this medication. If these side effects bother you then you should consult your doctor first for medical help.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
