Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was prescribed Bactrim for a bad cellulitis infection in my hand that had me in the hospital from Saturday afternoon till 12 noon today. I was on Vancomycin and Zolysn IV. I dropped my script off at the CVS pharmacy, and the pharmacist said she could not fill it because there is a severe reaction between the nortriptyline that I take every day and the Bactrim. I called my doctor (infectious disease) and he said he knew of no reactions and that she should fill it. Online, I am seeing a few websites that state there is a reaction. Could anyone comment on this for me.
There is no common interaction between Nortriptyline and Bactrim. However, rarely the use of Bactrim may cause a decrease in the effects of Nortriptyline, and you may need to increase it's dosage.
I suggest you to consult with your doctor about this interaction so that he can consider replacing Bactrim with another antibiotic, or he can follow the treatment and change the dosage of Nortriptyline if there is any change in it's effect.
Hope I have answered your query.
Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Suela Gjata,
General & Family Physician
