Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have surging pain in my right jaw. I have had TMJ before 15 years or more ago, but this pain is different. It does not go down into my whole body but just in my jaw and right arm. I take amlodipine for blood pressure (about a year) and strontium for bone density (3 or more years). Both have been helpful to treat as they are supposed to, but I have read that either might cause jaw pain. This pain surges from time to time, sometimes unbearably. No cold or hot hurts. I do chew on the other side. I went to the dentist. He says all looks great. What could be the problem
Based on the history you have shared, this pain can be due to nerve if no apparent dental deformity or illness has been noticed.
It's less likely to be because of the drugs but you should now stop taking strontium, as you have used it for quite long and you may restart after a gap of few months. Amlodipine may be continued.
If pain persists a maxillofacial surgeon should be consulted to look for any signs of maxillary division of trigeminal nerve getting compressed or any signs of trigeminal neuralgia.
Meanwhile OTC analgesics like acetaminophen or Ibuprofen can be helpful for symptomatic relief. X-ray of TMJ, or CT/MRI or face may be needed if problem persists.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
