Can Alprazolam And Escitalopram Be Taken Together?

Good day, i have been taking alprazolam for a month 250mg once a day, and today i was prescribed to take escitalopram 10mg once a day. I was very curious if i will still need to take alprazolam if the escitalopram doesn t work right away and if i will still encounter panic attacks? Alexander Sibayan

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

The dose of Alprazolam is incorrect. It's not safe to take these medications together. Alprazolam is a Benzodiazepine commonly prescribed 2-3 times daily used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders, and anxiety caused by depression.

Escitalopram is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor used for the treatment of the major depressive disorder (depression) and generalized anxiety disorder (anxiety). Taking Escitalopram together with Alprazolam can increase side effects such as drowsiness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, impaired thinking, judgment, and motor coordination which may result in falls and injuries.

You should consult your treating doctor for an alternate effective drug or adjust the dose of these medications. You should avoid activities requiring mental alertness such as driving, swimming, or operating hazardous machinery (if any)

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
