Can Alleve Be Taken While On Cumiden?

This is a drug interaction question. My husband is on cumiden. He fell down a couple of stairs on his right knee. The orthopedist saw no breaks, but, said to take alleve which is better than Tylenol for anti inflammatory He took it for 5 days...2 a day. Then, my friend said he should never take anything more than Tylenol. Is she right?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I understand your concern. It is generally known that mixing blood thinners (in this case coumadin) with non steroidal pain killers (i.e. alleve), is not recommended as the latter potentiate the effects of the former, resulting in increased hemorrhaging.
So, it is best to be on the safe side and refrain from using Alleve as a pain killer, and use Tylenol instead, even though it is not as strong.

I hope this helps.
Wishing you all the best.
