Benign Tumors, Removed From Breast, Red Discharge, Chest Burning In Nipples. What Medication Can Be Taken?

My mother had her benign rumors removed from her breast on 6 August. There were many small and deep seated tumors that were removed. The red discharge from the breasts has not stopped till now (14days post op) and she also feels a constant burning sensation in her nipples. What is the reason for the sensation? Does she need to take any medicine to stop this ? When will the discharge stop ?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The red discharge that your mother is seeing from the breasts is likely residual blood from the surgery. This is especially likely since the surgery was only 2 weeks ago.
It should diminish soon.

During any surgical procedure, it is possible to sustain mild trauma to superficial or deep nerves as the surgeon makes the incision.

This may account for the burning sensation.

It may also improve, though it may take a few weeks to months for her breasts to feel as they did prior to the surgery.

If she develops any signs or symptoms of infection she needs to see her doctor. This would include redness, increasing swelling, increased warmth, fever, a foul smelling discharge.

I hope this helps

Oncologist, Surgical Dr. Rohan Khandelwal's  Response
Dear Ma'am,

Sorry to hear about your mother's problem. The reddish discharge your mother is having after surgery is probably a seroma, which is fluid which collects at the site of the surgery and keeps on leaking out. If the discharge is more, it is best that you visit your surgeon and have the seroma aspirated. No medicines will help with the discharge.

During surgery, some nerves are cut and this is the cause of the burning sensation in her nipples. This will recover gradually with time.

Hoping for the best.
