At 39 Weeks Of Pregnancy Is It The Right Time To Get Induced Even If Cervix Has Not Softened?

Hi, I am pregnant but full term at 39 weeks. My doctor wont induce me cause he says my cervix hasn't softened yet but but I know a lot of people who was induced at 39 weeks in my position and still were induced. Do I have the right to make him induce me if he doesn't want to?

Hi and thanks for the query,

I understand your problem. The issue of induction is usually at the discretion of the treating physician as many factors like condition of baby, amount of amniotic fluid, any associated complications, condition of cervix and many more are to be considered to decide about induction as well as the method of induction for an optimal outcome.

The normal duration of pregnancy is 40 weeks. If there are no associated other complicating factors, induction is not advisable before this. There are also more chances of failed induction especially if the cervix is not ripe. Also, no two patients are same. So if other women have been induced, it does not necessarily mean that you will also need to be induced. The chances of a normal vaginal delivery are higher with spontaneous labor rather than induction.

Regarding it being your right is a technical detail that is more of a judicial nature. Considering that it is not only you but also the baby that has to be considered when inducing it is more of a collective decision for you both rather than the mother alone.

I suggest that you discuss all these issues with your doctor. Please explain to him the reasons for your queries and I am sure he will respond well.

I understand your problem and concern completely. Please do not worry. Keep a watch on your babies kicks. If at any time you have pain or blood stained discharge or the baby does not move properly, visit your doctor. Take a walk every morning and evening as it helps in onset of labor.

Hope this was helpful.
