Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Yes, Trimethoprim can cause harmful interaction if taken along with Lisinopril. The antibiotic combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim is commonly used to treat urinary tract infections, upper respiratory infections like sinusitis, middle ear infections (otitis media), bronchitis, traveler's diarrhea, and shigellosis (bacillary dysentery). Taking Trimethoprim along with lisinopril may increase potassium levels in the blood (hyperkalemia) which in severe cases can lead to kidney failure, muscle paralysis, irregular heart rhythm, and cardiac arrest.

You may be more likely to develop hyperkalemia while using these medications if you are elderly, dehydrated, have kidney disease, diabetes, or advanced heart failure. So, in view of the above, avoid taking Trimethoprim along with Lisinopril. Consult your treating doctor for an alternate effective but a safer antibiotic for the treatment of sinusitis.

Hope this answers your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali
