Are Tampons Safe To Be Used By A Teenager?

My daughter is 15 and has a very heavy menstrual flow. She uses both tampons and pads. She never uses tampons at night. I am wondering if there are any doctor recommended tampons for young women that are safe and don t have the roping fibers that seem to cause such concern along with TSS. I understand there is no eliminating the rish for TSS I m just wondering if the medical community has recommended what they feel is the safest tampon on the market. Thank you, Melanie

Hi,

Tampons are safe to use but the following measures should be kept in mind and hence please tell your daughter to :

1.     Use the lowest absorbency tampon
2.     Change the tampon frequently -- every 4 to 6 hours, or more often, depending on the flow
3.     Use pads on light flow days
4.     Keep the tampon box in a cool, dry place to keep bacteria from growing
5.     Always wash hands before putting a tampon in, or taking one out.

There are as such no particular tampons that I may recommend; but by following the above-mentioned precautions, TSS can be prevented along with any other infection that may creep in.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
