Are Spotting, Cramping And Sore Breast While On Birth Control Be The Symptoms Of Pregnancy?

I've been on the Nexplanon birth control for about 13 months now and have had very regular cycle until now. Instead of a normal flow I've only been spotting for the past 6 days. I've also been cramping pretty bad, had frequent head aches, changes in appetite, mood swings, and my breast have been swollen and tender. I've taken 2 pregnancy test and they were negative. Is it possible i could be pregnant?

Hello and welcome to the community,

I am Dr Nilajkumar a consultant gynecologist and I will be helping you in your queries.
The symptoms are due to nexplanon and not due to pregnancy. Spotting, tender breasts and mood swings may be caused due to the implant. The nexplanon supresses the hormones naturally present in our body. It decreases the growth of the endometrium, the part of uterus that is shed during menses. After some days, the endometrium outgrows the effect of nexplanon and may cause spotting as it is shed irregularly. A short course of estrogen may help in such cases but needs to be taken under medical supervision by prescription so you will need to see your doctor. Also the symptoms tend to disappear after some time as one gets used to them. A regular exercise and proper sleep help control some of these symptoms.
