There are many possible causes of an elevated ESR.ESR is a non specific marker. A specific cause cannot be determined based on ESR alone.Generally it is followed up with other tests to diagnose medical condition.Firstly, you need proper clinical examination. High ESR indicate that person is having some infection or inflammation in the body. Increased ESR may be due to arthritis like rheumatoid, ankylosing spondolytis etc.Few X-rays like both hands (AP),X-ray both SI joints should be taken for confirmation of arthritis. You may also need few blood tests like RA factor, anti CCP,HLA B27 etc for confirmation of arthritis. You should go for further evaluation.Treatment depend upon findings.
