Are Headaches After A Head Injury Serious?

2 days ago, during a sprint, I became dizzy, started to walk, then passed out and fell, hitting my head. I had no loss of cognitive function, maintained balance, and did not vomit. My head and upper-back of neck hurt for the first 2 days with a very mild, almost-a-headache throb. Now, the second night after, while trying to go to sleep, I have developed a pretty bad headache. Is this the sign of something serious?

Hello. Thanks for asking from HCM.

I can understand your concern. It is good that you have good knowledge of serious head injury. You did not have any dangerous signs and symptoms of head injury like vomiting, balance difficulty, cognitive impairment. I will enhance your knowledge of head injury so that you can correlate it with your injury. Other alarming features of head injury are loss of consciousness, bleed through nose/ear/throat, onset of new focal deficit, persistent headache not responding to pain killers, decreasing consciousness.

Now in your case if your headache is persisting even after pain killers, then you should consult ER as soon as possible. But if you have not taken any medications, you should take pain killer like Diclofenac sodium after proper prescription and wait for response. If it is decreasing, then no need to worry. Avoid taking drugs which cause sedation like tramadol, diazepam. In case of vomiting, turn head to side.

Thanks. Hope it will help you. Take care
