Are Elevated Liver Enzymes A Matter Of Concern?

I am a patient affiliated with Wilson s disease. I have been taking D-Penicillamine for the past 12 years and for the past 4 years taking Zevit tablets. For the past three months, I have been taking 1 Cillamine and 3 Zevit tablets per day as the doctor prescribed owing to shortage of D-Penicillamine medicines. Recently one of my relatives diagnosed with liver disease died suddenly due to liver infection affiliated with jaundice and she had been suffering from Wilson s disease. Moreover she was affected with Liver-oriented Wilson s disease. So I was alerted and took Blood test,Urine test and Liver function test. Blood test and Urine test were normal but in Liver function test, it was found out that S.G.P.T.=245, S.G.O.T.=57,Alkaline phosphatase=115. Is that a problem? I am not affected with Liver-oriented Wilson s disease but with Neuro-Wilson s disease.

Hi,

Liver enzymes may be raised because of various causes. In your case, some may be more possible but in every case, it requires evaluation of the cause. Most common causes of such liver derangement's are Alcohol, Viral hepatitis, Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, Drugs.
Gamma GT is most commonly raised due to alcohol intake and in case you take alcohol, you need to keep a control over it.
If you don't take it, you need following tests: hepatitis virus markers, Ultrasound Abdomen and HIDA scan. A lot many times, liver dysfunction is due to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD). So, if you have any evidence of fatty liver in Ultrasound and your other tests are negative, this rise is liver enzyme would be attributed to NAFLD. For this, you need to reduce your weight, reduce fat in the diet.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
