Are Abnormal Periods A Symptom Of Uterine Fibroid?

I am a 54 year old woman in fairly good health. My periods got erratic a couple years ago. I had my knees replaced Nov 2016, had 3 regular periods 3 months after that, in a row, on time. They stopped again and about 9 months later I had another one. I went for a pap smear today and my doctor wants to do a sonogram thinking I have fibroid tumors. I have NO other symptoms of these tumors. What do you think?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

At this age, for irregular periods, there are many conditions like fibroid, endometriosis, hormonal imbalance; other uterine and ovarian conditions are responsible.

Do ultrasound abdomen and pelvis. You can tablet Primolut N and tablet Pause if severe bleeding after consultation. Keep yourself hydrated.

I will suggest you to follow up with detailed history or consult with gynaecologist for detailed examination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shyam B. Kale
