Question: i suffer very badly from hay fever, my symptoms are so severe that they affect my ability to do daily tasks. ive been taking a nasal spray which is not effectively reducing my allergy symptoms but havent taken any oral antihistamine because during the day at times i have to breastfeed my toddler whose 21 months old. can I take a 10 mg tablet of cetrizine?

Yes ,you can safely take cetrizine for your hay fever symptoms in addition to the nasal spray.Very insignificant amounts of it are secreted in breast milk and does not cause any sedation and adverse effects in the baby.

Compared to some other antihistamines, cetirizine has minimum chance of causing drowsiness for the mother as well because it is a nonsedating anti histaminic.

I would suggest you to start with a low dose of 5 mg and escalate it to 10 mg,if needed.

Loratadine is also safe for you.
