Question: i need to ask about about STI. if I need to get a test in Pakistan/India, you don't usually get to find a swab test for herpes or clymedia. the available tests are only the blood tests. what's the difference between the two and is it possible that I have herpes locally and my bloodtest still shows it at negative? thanks

Brief Answer:
Regarding STDs

Detailed Answer:
Hello and welcome to ask a doctor service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

A swab test is certainly better early on after suspected infection. It is a direct test which detects nuclear antigens of herpes or chlamydia whereas a blood test only becomes reliable after 6-8 weeks in case of herpes whereas in case of chlamydia one needs to demonstrate a rise in titre over a period of time. So, if its early on after infection a swab test is certainly better when a blood test may give a false positive result.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if you need any more assistance.
