Question: hello, i injured my upper back in the year 2000 lifting a very heavy door, i am a 52 year old carpenter. on driving home i lost feeling in my hands and arms and had to get a lift home. after a few weeks it did ease and i went back to work. it happened again a few years later and i had a mri scan but they said they could not see anything and put it down to osteoarthritis. after back injections which did not work i carried on as normal.
about 5 years ago it happened again and this time my fingers went numb but the doctors said it was my posture and sent meto physio which just made it worse.
last XXXXXXX i injured it again and had to have another three weeks off work. the rest seemed to work but a few weeks later my whole hands went numb and very painful below my thumbs.
now recently first my three smallest toes on my right foot went numb followed by numbness in both legs and now finding it difficult to walk, also extreem pain in right shoulder when i lift my arm and lower back pain aswell.
bit of a nightmare to be honest but with a family and mortgage dont need to waste my time with local doctors who cant see you for weeks
your help would be good
thank you XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
Probably a nerve issue, treatment suggestions are explained below in details

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

I understand your concern.

Your symptoms seem to be related to a nerve issue.

I agree with the doctors that it can be osteoarthritis, which causes the symptoms.

I recommend to treat the pain with painkillers.

I suggest to take anti-inflammatory medication such as Ibuprofen 400 mg three tablets a day.

I also recommend taking a muscle relaxant such as Baclofen three times a day.

Physical therapy can also be helpful.

I recommend to follow a healthy lifestyle and do moderate exercising daily.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
