Brief Answer:
Otitis externa

Detailed Answer:
Hello
I have gone through your query and understood your concern.

The most common cause of ear pain is an ear infection, that is called otitis.
(otitis media or otitis externa)

Otitis media is an infection of the middle ear, while otitis externa is an infection of the ear canal.Considering that your pain is on the outside ,i can suggets that it can be related to a problem of ear canal or auricle.

Outer ear infection can be caused by swimming, wearing hearing aids or headphones that damage the skin inside the ear canal, or putting cotton swabs or fingers in the ear canal.

Other potential causes of unilateral ear pain can be :
earwax buildup, shampoo or water trapped in the ear, sinus infection, use of cotton swabs in the ear, eczema in the ear canal

You have intermittent pain of one ear,no discharge(an important sign of ear infection) and no history of ear injury.

My advice for you is to consult physically an ENT specialist in your area for the right diagnosis and treatment.

Meantime I suggest to try these tips to ease your ear pain: Apply a cold washcloth to the ear. Avoid getting the ear wet, Sit upright to help relieve ear pressure, Use OTC ear drops, Chew gum to help relieve pressure.

Hope this is helpful.
Regards
