Will The CAT Scan Radiations Have Any Side Effects On The Body?

default
Posted on Tue, 19 May 2015
Question: Hi - I had a lower GI and pelvis catscan last December (nothing was found). I am concerned about the radiation as I am young, want kids (did it hurt my eggs), air travel domestic overseas fair amount, etc. Also, this concerns me about test I may need later (such as mamograms). I did not know that MRI was an option and regret the catscan now and how it may affect me radiation-wise in the years to come. It was contrast, about 8 msv. Thoughts or advice?

Brief Answer:
Absolutely nothing to worry about

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. A PET scan is considered very safe and exposes you to minimal amounts of radiation, and is nothing that can really cause you damage.

The contrast administered leaves your body in a few hours and there is absolutely nothing retained that can cause you any damage from there either. So in conclusion, my honest opinion is that you can safely have children in the future, you have not damaged your eggs, and you need not worry about going through any other investigations now or in the future to rule out any form of cancer or growth due to exposure from the PET scan.

I hope you find my response both helpful and informative. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
