Will Birth Control Pill Save From Pregnancy?

default
Posted on Wed, 24 Jan 2024
Question: hi. I had sex with my wife for the first time after marriage on 11 December. It was unprotected but i didnt get discharge. We immediately bought YAZ birth control pill and she stared its 28 days course. After 9 days on 20th we again had an unprotected sex but my wife was and is taking birth control pills. We think its too early to have a child. Will this birth control pill save her from pregnancy? And does she have to continue birth control pills even after her period if they happen and complete 28 days course? And if she misses her period then what to do?

Brief Answer:
Hi,

Detailed Answer:
YAZ is a combined hormone Birth-control pill. It helps in preventing pregnancy. However, it may take some time for its effect to start, may be around 5-7 days. Therefore, it is advised to adopt some alternative method like condoms etc. along with use of YAZ for first one week.
In your case, just on the first day of course, you may not be protected against pregnancy. However, if the conception did not take place during your act of Dec. 11, then, you are definitely protected against having pregnancy due to sexual act of Dec. 20.
After a course of complete pack of tablets, if you have regular menses, then for continuing contraceptive effect, you can continue use of this pill, as long as you do not want a pregnancy. During your next cycles of pill, you need not use of alternative method like condoms etc.

Hi. I didn’t discharge when i had sex the first time. Maybe a little bit of pre cum. What is the ratio of her getting pregnant. As she is taking birth control pills too. And its been more than 17 days now since we had sex first time and the start of pills. How can we check that whether she is pregnant or not?

Brief Answer:
Hi,

Detailed Answer:
Though precum itself does not contain sperms, it just acts as a lubricant in the act of sex. However, some semen can leak into precum, making the pregnancy possible. In different studies, the presence of motile sperms in the precum has been described from 10-20 %. Therefore, it can make the pregnancy possible, at least theoretically. Still, in actual practice, the chances of being pregnant with precum are very low. Also, it will depend on the time of sexual act. The period around the time of ovulation is most fertile, making the chances of pregnancy more likely.
Use of Birth Control pill has no role to play in your first act of sex, as the effectivity of pills had not started yet. However, it is definitely effective against subsequent act of sex.
To confirm/ rule out of pregnancy, you may have to wait for completion of your cycle of birth control pills & to see, if the periods are there as usual, which will make the presence of pregnancy unlikely. If the periods are absent, even after one week of use of active tablets, then there is likelihood of pregnancy.
For a definite result, an home pregnancy test may be taken, which will confirm/rule out the presence of pregnancy.

My wife had period on 7th december. Her periods finish mostly within 3 days. We had our first sex on 11th December. It was an unprotected one but she started taking pills(YAZ) that day right after sex as we searched through google that “ we should take it or start the course of birth control pills within 72 hours to reduce risk of pregnancy”. I didn’t discharge at all. Well there might be some precum or little bit semen inside her. What is the ratio of her getting pregnant in this scenario? And can you please tell me some symptoms she might be having if she is pregnant to see whether she is or not. Its been 18 days since we had sex first time. And will the home test be effective at this point. Or should we wait till 7th for her periods to start. She is been having very irregular pattern of periods since months so we dont know when the next one will occur

Brief Answer:
Hi,

Detailed Answer:
I do not think Birth Control pill like YAZ is effective for preventing the pregnancy if taken on the very first day of sex or within 72 hours of the act. However, Pills like PLAN B ( Morning after pill ) are usually effective, if taken within 72 hours & preferably within 24 hours, but regular Birth Control pills like YAZ do not act like this.
During first 2-3 weeks, symptoms of pregnancy are not usually very specific, rather these may be very vague like Nausea, mood swings, fatigue, pelvic pain, cramps or sore breast etc. etc. Hence Home Pregnancy Test seems the only reliable way in your case. Test taken within 2 weeks of act of sex, should confirm/rule out the pregnancy in almost all the cases. Hope, I have given reply to your queries.
