Why Is Prozac Prescribed During Menopause?

default
Posted on Sat, 5 Nov 2016
Question: I am a 68 year old female that has been on Bio-Identical Hormones for over 10 yrs. I decided in the last
6 weeks to go off them, thinking that there was no reason to be on them. At my annual OBGYN visit yesterday, she said I still needed to be on something and suggest the Prozac generic. Reading the side
effects I am Not wanting to start those pills. She said she would do whatever I wanted, we've been working together for 20 years. Don't want Prozac, can get a prescription for the creme, what problems are associated with that at this age & for years to come?

Brief Answer:
Prozac will decrease menopausal symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
Bioidentical hormones are very safe in postmenopausal years. Prozac will help in decreasing the symptoms of menopause like hot flashes, etc. If you want to avoid taking it and you feel better while off all the drugs even then there is no harm in it. You can add some calcium supplements to decrease the bone loss due to osteoporosis.
The cream can be used in case of vaginal dryness or irritation but if there are symptoms then you can avoid using it also.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.
